Camp Moab (campmoab.com) is an independent, ad-supported guide to camping around Moab, Utah. This page explains what information the site collects, why, who else handles it, and the choices you have. We try to collect as little as possible.

Questions or requests: email [email protected].

The short version

  • You can read the whole site without an account, and we don’t run analytics or tracking of our own.
  • The site shows ads from Google AdSense. Google may use cookies to personalize ads, and visitors in the EU, UK, Switzerland, and some US states are asked for consent or given an opt-out first.
  • If you comment or create an account, we store what you give us (like your name and email) so the site works.
  • We don’t sell your personal information for money.

Information collected automatically

Like any website, the servers that deliver Camp Moab receive technical information with every request: your IP address, browser and device type, the page you asked for, the referring page, and the time.

  • Cloudflare sits in front of the site to deliver it quickly and block attacks and abusive traffic. It processes this request information and may set strictly necessary security cookies (for example, to tell people apart from bots).
  • Hostinger hosts the site and may keep standard server logs.
  • Security logging: the site records IP addresses alongside events such as logins, failed login attempts, and blocked requests, so it can stop attacks. These logs are kept for 6 months.

Comments

If you leave a comment, we store your comment, the name and email you provide, an optional website, your IP address, and your browser’s user-agent string. We use these to display your comment, to moderate and fight spam, and to contact you about your comment if needed. Your email address is never shown publicly.

Profile pictures next to comments come from Gravatar, a service run by Automattic. To find your picture, a coded (hashed) version of your email address is sent to Gravatar. See Automattic’s privacy policy.

Comments and the information attached to them are kept until the comment is deleted. You can ask us to delete yours at any time.

Accounts and signing in with Google or Facebook

An account is only needed to comment. If you register with an email address, we store your username, email address, and an encrypted (hashed) password. We use your email only for account messages, such as setting or resetting your password.

If you choose to sign in with Google or Facebook, that service tells us your name, email address, and profile picture, and asks your permission before doing so. We never see your Google or Facebook password, and we don’t post anything to your accounts. Google’s and Facebook’s own privacy policies cover how they handle the sign-in.

Account information is kept until you ask us to delete your account.

Cookies

  • Necessary cookies keep you signed in, remember your name and email for the comment form if you ask it to, and help block attacks. The site doesn’t work properly without them, so they don’t need consent.
  • Advertising cookies are set by Google and its advertising partners, as described below. Where the law requires it, they’re only used with your consent.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings.

Advertising

Camp Moab is free to read because it shows ads. We use Google AdSense.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
  • You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info, or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu.
  • Learn more about how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

If you’re in the European Economic Area, the UK, or Switzerland, a consent message from Google lets you accept or decline personalized ads, and you can change your choice at any time. If you decline, you’ll still see ads, but they won’t be personalized. In US states with privacy laws, a similar message lets you opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of your information for targeted advertising.

Affiliate links and local sponsors

Some links are affiliate links: if you buy something after clicking one, we may earn a commission at no cost to you. These links are marked, and the retailer you land on may set its own cookies to credit the sale, under its own privacy policy. Ads from local Moab businesses are shown as plain images and links, with no tracking from us.

Who else handles your information

We share information only with the service providers needed to run the site:

  • Hostinger: website hosting and email
  • Cloudflare: content delivery and security
  • Google: advertising (AdSense), and sign-in if you choose it
  • Meta (Facebook): sign-in, only if you choose it
  • Automattic (Gravatar): comment profile pictures
  • Backblaze: backup storage

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the site and its visitors from fraud or abuse. We don’t sell personal information for money. Under some US state laws, letting advertising partners use cookies for targeted ads can count as “selling” or “sharing,” which is why the opt-out described above exists.

How long we keep information

  • Comments and accounts: until deleted, by you or by us.
  • Security logs: 6 months.
  • Backups: the site’s database is backed up daily. Daily backups are kept for 2 weeks, weekly backups for 8 weeks, and monthly backups for 12 months, so deleted information can remain in backups for up to about a year.

Your rights and choices

Wherever you live, you can ask us to show you, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you, including your comments and account. Email the address at the top of this page. We may need to confirm the request comes from you, for example by replying from the email address on your account or comment.

If you’re in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, you also have the right to object to or restrict how we use your information, to receive a copy of it, and to complain to your local data protection authority. We rely on your consent for personalized advertising, on our legitimate interest in running and securing the site for logs and anti-spam, and on providing the service you asked for when you comment or create an account.

If you’re in a US state with a privacy law, such as California, you also have the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your information for targeted advertising (see Advertising, above), and we won’t treat you differently for using any of these rights.

Where information is stored

The site is hosted by Hostinger in the United States, delivered worldwide through Cloudflare, and backed up with Backblaze in the United States. If you visit from outside these places, your information is transferred to them. These providers protect it under their own data-transfer safeguards.

Children

Camp Moab isn’t directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you think a child has given us information, email us and we’ll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change how the site handles information, for example by adding analytics, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
